Mold
Mold after water damage
Mold needs moisture and time. Dry the structure within a day or two and it often never starts.
Why it shows up
The EPA says water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. Humid air, closed-up rooms and wet insulation extend the window in which growth can start.
Soft materials such as ceiling tiles and carpet that grow mold may have to be thrown away, per the EPA, since they are hard to clean.
Who may do mold work in Florida
Florida defines mold remediation as treatment of mold or mold-contaminated matter greater than 10 square feet that was not purposely grown there, and defines mold assessment as sampling and evaluation of areas greater than 10 square feet. Chapter 468, part XVI of the statutes bars anyone from performing or offering mold assessment or remediation unless they comply with that part, and bars use of titles like licensed mold remediator without it.
Under the same statute a mold assessor cannot remediate a structure the assessor's company evaluated in the previous 12 months, with an exception for certain contractors. Work that also needs a general contractor's license has to be done by someone who holds it.
How this site handles mold calls
This website advertises no mold services of its own. A caller asking about mold is referred to independent firms that are properly licensed for that work. Check the license yourself on the Department of Business and Professional Regulation site before you sign anything.
Questions for the contractor
- What is your state mold license number?
- Is the assessment separate from the remediation, and by whom?
- What moisture source was fixed?
- How will you confirm the work is complete?
